Wash tomatoes, peel onions and cut into thick rings.
Place the cloves and part of the onion in sterilized jars. Fill the jars to the top with tomatoes, alternating with onion rings.
Boil water and pour boiling water over tomatoes in jars. Cover the jars with sterile lids and leave for 20 minutes to warm up.
Drain the liquid from the jars into a saucepan, add salt and sugar, bring to a boil. Enter the vinegar, stir and remove the saucepan from the heat.
Pour boiling marinade over tomatoes. Roll up the jars, turn upside down and leave to cool completely. Store the cooled workpiece in a cool, dark place.
