Chop the cabbage, sprinkle with sugar and mash it slightly.
Chop cucumbers, tomatoes, peeled onions and bell peppers. Grate the carrots on a coarse grater.
Put the vegetables in layers in a deep saucepan in the following order: carrots, onions, bell peppers, cucumbers, cabbage and tomatoes. Cover with a lid and leave for 2-3 hours.
Put the pan on low heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
Add salt, oil, spices and cook for another 10 minutes.
Pour in the vinegar, stir and remove from the heat after 1 minute.
Arrange the hot salad in jars, roll it up, turn it upside down and wrap it with a thick blanket.
